This is our first trip to Wisconsin. We took
I-39. It is an excellent road but I am learning fast
about toll roads. We first saw a toll road sign that said
exact change needed. We did not have any change and no way to
get any. Wait--we do have a piggy bank. I ran into the back of
the RV, opened the bottom of the bank and took out a bunch of
quarters. I got back up front just as we were pulling into the line
at the booth. The booth did not have an attendant. Thank
goodness for that piggy bank. Then we came upon the
second toll booth a little later on. But I was prepared, and now I
keep a few dollars and lots of quarters within my reach.
All the interstate roads and country roads were the
best we have traveled. On one of the back roads we saw (2 times) a
family of wild turkeys crossing the road at a very leisurely pace.
This was a first for us. And finally we got out of the corn
fields.
We stayed at the Deer Trail Park Campground in
Nekoosa on Cty rd Z for 3 days . (1-715-886-3871) Nekoosa was a small town
(2590 population) and was very clean. Everybody was very
friendly to our southern accent. The Rainbow Casino was there and
took a few dollars from us.
Some campers next to us told us of a Brats, Brew &
Dance they were having at the Stevens Point Brewery. We went
up there. You know of the beer company that has the Clydesdale
horses pulling their wagon, right? Well, Point Brewery
had a little red wagon filled with beer pulled by about 10 oscar
meyer weiner dogs. It was just too cute. 2 of the dogs were
strangely colored.
We also visited Wisc. Dells and took a ride in one
of the boats. It was where the rocks kinda created images by
wear & tear from mother nature. It was interesting. But it was
certainly a big tourist trap. Every kind of ride, water park,
miniature golf, etc. was there. It could get expensive
for a family real fast. The previous campground we had stayed
at told us to "no way take a big rig RV into the dells". We
were soo glad we listened.
We left Nekoosa traveling up 39 to near Wausau and
taking 29 to 22 at Shawano then 41 north which turned into 35 right
up along Lake Michigan. It was a beautiful drive.
