The Sudan Camping Club had a rally at the
Senator Bob Martin Agricultural Center in Williamston NC the last of
October. Williamston is about an hour or so on Hwy 64/Hwy 17 from
the outer banks. It is a center for holding horse shows, rodeos,
etc. They were holding a horse show the Saturday we were there. It
was very interesting to see those young girls get those big ole
horses to do what they want. It looked very easy, but I am sure it
took a long time to train them.
There are about 50 RV sites with electric
and water with 2 dump stations. It is easy off Hwy
64/17. Their address is 2900 NC Hwy 125 South, and phone number
252-792-5111. If you are traveling 64 East to the outer banks,
their exit is 512 and turn left at the end of the ramp. Their
building is beige with a red roof.
We had a good time with the campers,
some new, most old - I think we ended up with 27 rigs. Saturday
night we had a catered meal by the Filing Station which was very
good. The other meals were provided by members of the camping
club who did an excellent job, as always.
After the rally Jim & I went over to the Outer
Banks to Avon and stayed at the Sands of Time campground. It
is the only Passport America campground on the banks. It was very
nice, across the highway from the beach but close enough for us.
They did not have a swimming pool, club house, etc. but it was
a clean small park.
We visited Jim's cousin who lives near the
Cape Hatteras lighthouse. We also saw alot of Hurricane Isabel
damage which hit last month. We went as far as we could on Hwy 12
but the hurricane had cut a new inlet just below Avon and the road
was just gone and barricaded with a deputy standing guard.
We could also take the ferry over which is a
total of 101 driving miles.
But since Hurricane Isabel visited us last month, they are not
running yet.
There are 3 ferries:
one from Cedar Island just beyond Atlantic to Ocracoke.
One from Ocracoke to Hatteras.
One from Hatteras to the mainland of the outer banks just below
Avon.
