The Forest Animals were gathering Just  for Fun

to welcome the arrival of the new summer sun

 

The forest was green and so was the meadow

Fires were burning under large black kettles

The rabbits brought carrots
 

The moles brought the potatoes



The Opossums brought turnips

the squirrels the tomatoes
 

The beavers brought fish all smoked over hickory

and the raccoons brought fruits and nuts fresh from picking

 

The door mice had made a fresh salad

with wild lettuce, celery and green cabbage

 

There were leeks from the stoats, shrimp from the shrews

The raccoons picked a big basket of mushrooms
 

The hedgehogs brought their famous cider

and fruit drinks from their underground larder

 

Each family choose a tree for shade and shadow

with blankets to sit upon close to the meadow

The meadowlark, sparrows, cardinals and their friends

Made up a melodious tree top band

There were horseshoes, softball, 3 legged races

Old stories were told and children’s play with painted faces

Oh what a wonderful day it was

when all the forest animals joined in the fun
